Within the cell, chloramphenicol binds to the 50S Subunit of bacterial ribosomes and inhibits bacterial protein synthesis. The attachment of amino-acyl transfer RNA to its acceptor site on the ribosome is inhibited, preventing peptide bond formation by peptidyl transferase.
